How to cast on ribbing

In this tutorial you will learn to cast on in a tubular 1-by-1 rib. This makes the cast on edge blend in smoothly with the rib. The edge will have a light stretch to it, perfect for garments. For this tutorial you will need yarn and corresponding knitting needles.

Step-by-step instructions

The cast on consists of the first stitch, the purl stitch and the knit stitch. The latter two are repeated. Here I describe those stitches seperately. See the video tutorial for reference.

The first stitch

  1. Take a long strand of yarn and fold it.
  2. Lay the folded part over the index finger and thumb of your left hand, and hold the two tails with all your other fingers.
  3. With your right hand, stick the point of your needle down behind the yarn, and twist your needle towards you and up. The yarn is now twisted around the needle once, this will be your first stitch.

Continue to cast on the other stitches, in order to secure this first one.

The purl

We’ll now create the purl stitch like so:

  1. Twist your needle behind and underneath both strands.
  2. Move your needle up and over the first strand.
  3. Go down inbetween both strands.
  4. Go up behind both strands.

You have made a purl stitch. Keep tension so that you will not release the stitches.

The knit

Create a knit stitch like so:

  1. Move your needle to the front, under the first stitch, up in between the strands.
  2. Move your needle back and behind the second strand.
  3. Now move your needle to the front going underneath both strands and up.

This is your knit stitch.

Finishing

Continue doing the purl, then the knit, and repeat until you have 1 stitch less then you need. To seal your stitches, do one regular ‘long tail cast on’-stitch. Start with two rows of double knitting to make the cast on tubular and more stretchy. Now you can start knitting normally. If you want to connect in the round, this is when you do it.
