How to knit cables
This tutorial describes the basics of knitting cables. There are many different types of cables, but this tutorial describes a simple three by three cable, also abbreviated as C6F. This stands for a Cable, made up out of 6 stitches, and that is twisted in the Front.
To knit cables, you will need a cable needle. In the example I use this one, but they come in many different bended shapes and in different sizes. As long as the thickness of the cable needle is similar to your other knitting needles, it will work. Choose any type or brand you prefer.
Step-by-step instructions
A cable is usually surrounded by purl stitches, to give it more definition. You knit it like so:
- First, knit your row until you reach your cable.
- Then, slip three stitches unto your cable needle, and bring them to the front of your work. Leave them hanging here.
- Knit three stitches that are on your left needle.
- Bring the stitches on the cable needle back unto the left needle, and knit them.
- Your cable is complete! Work the rest of the row normally.
You have now twisted around the stitches, and created the cable. You will see the effect more clearly after a few more rows (on which you don’t work cables). Make sure to work a cable at the same interval of rows to keep them even.
