This tutorial teaches you how to do the KFB stitch, which stands for Knit Front & Back. This is an increase stitch that can be done both on the knit or purl side of your work and it’s usually worked in the first and/or last stitch of a row. For this stitch you will need knitting needles and a corresponding yarn. The tutorial will be demonstrated on a piece of stockinette knitting.

Step-by-step instructions

These instructions describe how to do a KFB on both the first and last stitch of the row. First, knit a few rows in pattern. Once you want to start your increases, go to the next step:

  1. Insert your needle into the first stitch as if to knit.
  2. Wrap your yarn around the needle as if to knit.
  3. Pull your right needle through the stitch as if to knit, DO NOT slip off the stitch yet.
  4. Now, with both stitches still on your needles, insert your right needle into the back leg of the stitch on your left needle.
  5. Wrap your yarn around the needle as if to knit.
  6. Pull your right needle through the stitch as if to knit, and slip the stitch off your left needle.
  7. You KFB is done, you have now increased 1 stitch.

You can work your row in the desired pattern, and do a KFB on the last stitch too. This creates a more slanted increased edge, perfect for dropped shoulder designs for example.
